Boxing Day originated in Britain during the Middle Ages and got its name from the fact that on the day after Christmas, servants would receive gift boxes of food or money, from their masters as a token of appreciation for working on Christmas Day. The servants were also given the day off, which could account for why it came to be observed as a holiday.
