The Full Story

A new state-of-the-art computer classroom valued at some $2 million has been opened at the Prospect College in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

The facility, along with 12 new computers, donated by the Mitchell Green Foundation, will provide training opportunities for 30 male students at the institution as they focus on the latest in computer technology, and prepare themselves for lifelong learning.

Briton Blackwell, Principal of the College who received the computers from Peter Green, Chairman of the Foundation said,”I feel very excited because we had computers before, but these will allow more students to gain access to these modern Pentium Four rated machines, which will help to put Prospect College on the cutting edge of technology”.

Expressing gratitude for the classroom and computers, Mr. Blackwell said the college was providing “a unique experience with semi-military band and music training, in addition to the normal academic curriculum, and now with an emphasis on computer skills”.

He said that in addition to academic pursuits at the institution, two major areas of focus were strict discipline and self-reliance.

Prospect College, located on the Prospect Plantation in Ocho Rios, was founded in 1956 by the late British baronet, Colonel Sir Harold Mitchell, a former chairman of Britain’s Conservative Party, and for many years a generous friend of Jamaica.

Sir Harold established the college to help train young Jamaicans for citizenship. Each boy who is admitted on full scholarship becomes a cadet. No fees are payable and all the boys must live on campus.

Young men between the ages of 14 and 18 years attend the college. They are enrolled on a three-year residential scholarship, and sit the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) exams at the end of the course, with the possibility of earning a scholarship to pursue tertiary level education.

The Prospect College Band participates in a number of civic functions in the parish.
