Proceeds from Caribbean Fashion Week to Fight Against Child Hunger

The 2007 Caribbean Fashion Week, while showcasing the best designers in the region, will have a more humanitarian purpose, with the proceeds from one night of the show to be donated to the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP).
Chief Executive Officer of Pulse, Kingsley Cooper, who made the announcement at the launch of the show at the Jamaican High Commission in London on Monday (Feb.12), said that this year’s event would be held in collaboration with CatWalk the World, which organizes high profile fashion shows to raise funds to fight child hunger.
“What it is, is using the fashion industry, using fashion shows to create and generate revenues to go toward the United Nations World Food Programme projects and using fashion to attract the interest of celebrities, goodwill ambassadors and celebrity designers. We thought it was a wonderful idea so we have come on board and we will give all proceeds of one night to CatWalk the World,” Mr. Cooper said.
Jamaican High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Burchell Whiteman commended Pulse on the worthy cause.
UNWFP UK Liaison Officer Gregory Barrow, also spoke at the launch, expressed the hope that CatWalk the World would become an established part of fashion events across the world and help to raise the awareness of the scope of hunger that affects some 850 million people around the world.
At the launch, it was announced that the Pulse Caribbean Model Search would also be conducted in the United Kingdom, with more details to be announced in April.
CatWalk the World was launched last year in Lagos, Nigeria as an offshoot of the UNWFP annual global march ‘Fight Hunger: Walk the World,’ which mobilizes funds to fight child hunger.
The international campaign entails fashion shows around the world with the biggest and most famous designers showcasing their work. This year’s show, which will be held in South Africa in May, will serve as a curtain raiser for the annual Walk the World event.
Caribbean Fashion Week will be held in Kingston from June 6 to 10.
