The Full Story

Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has stated that the partners in the bauxite and alumina sector must be prepared to do everything to ensure the successful implementation of the expansion planned by ALOCA at the JAMALCO plant in Clarendon.
“We must ensure a successful implementation of the project in the context of fairness between all the stakeholders, safety and good environmental practices,” Mr. Patterson said.
The Prime Minister was speaking at a meeting involving Ministers of Government, representatives from the bauxite sector and Mr. John Sibly, President of Global Manufacturing at ALCOA World Alumina and Chemicals at Jamaica House on Wednesday (Mar. 10).
Mr. Patterson stressed the importance that Jamaica attaches to the expansion of the JAMALCO plant. He said both ALCOA and the Government of Jamaica have worked hard at making it a reality and as such must remain resolute in seeing it through to the end. Among the factors which made the expansion possible, was the amendment of the Bauxite Levy regime and the subsequent commitment by ALCOA to increase its capacity to 1.25 million tones. Mr. Patterson also attested to the significant contribution of the Jamaican workforce and the supportive response forthcoming from the neighbourhood.
The Prime Minister said the Government welcomed the new training facility to be established and operated by JAMALCO in collaboration with the HEART Trust/NTA, to provide skills training for labourers who will be involved in the construction phase of the project and beyond.
Speaking at Wednesday’s meeting, Mr. John Sibly outlined his company’s projections as it relates to productivity and earnings for the economy, including transforming JAMALCO into a world cost competitive refinery. He said ALCOA had a great working relationship with the Government and welcomed the commitment that existed between the partners. Among those attending the meeting were, Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Hon. Omar Davies, Minister of Development Dr. Hon. Paul Robertson, Minister of Labour Hon. Horace Dalley, Minister of Education Hon. Maxine Henry-Wilson, Minister of Water and Housing Hon.
