Portland Lay Magistrates Association Assists Student

As Jamaicans continue to extend help to the families of the victims of the December 2008 road accident in the Rio Grande Valley area of Portland, the Portland Lay Magistrates Association has undertaken to provide financial support for the schooling of Andrean Rodgers, who lost her father in that tragedy.
Andrean, whose father Lanford Rodgers, was among the 14 persons who died in the accident, is currently a grade eight student at the Fellowship Primary and Junior High School in the parish.
In a philanthropic gesture, members of the Portland Lay Magistrates Association have assumed responsibility to provide the assistance necessary to enable her to complete her education at the secondary level.
A cheque for $24,000 was presented by the Association to Andrean’s mother, Althea Douglas, during a short presentation function, held recently at the studio of the Satcum Cable Network in Port Antonio.
The money, which will cover a part of the schooling expenses for Andrean for this and the next school term, was the second presentation made by the Association, as the first, which amounted to $12,000, was made earlier this year.
Making the presentation, Custos of Portland, Hon. Roy Thompson, who is also head of the Portland Lay Magistrates Association, said he was pleased to do so, as the case was a very needy and deserving one.
He noted that the Association will be making a special effort to create a Fund from which the presentation was made to Andrean, and appealed to the citizens of Portland to make generous contributions to the effort, in order to help the Association to meet its commitment to this needy cause.
Accepting the cheque, Miss Douglas thanked members of the Association for its kind gesture, and promised to play her part in ensuring that Andrean demonstrates her appreciation by performing well in school and conducts herself in an acceptable manner at all times.
Speaking to JIS News, Andrean thanked the Portland Lay Magistrates Association for the assistance, and said the gesture will go a far way in enabling her to realise her dreams and objectives as a student.
