The Full Story

Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding says it is too soon to determine the cost of the damage to the island’s infrastructure caused by the severe rains, and its impact on the budget.
However, he said that whatever adjustments are needed, would have to be explored, as necessary.

Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding (centre) addresses a press conference, which he called at Jamaica House yesterday (Sept. 29), to give an update on flood damage across the island, and the various actions being taken by the government and its response agencies. The press conference was chaired by Minister with Responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz (2nd left), and included participation from Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles (left): Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Ronald Jackson (2nd right); and Head of Communications at the Jamaica Defence Force, Colonel Rocky Meade.

“How those adjustments will be designed is something we will have to explore from the discussions we have had with our international partners, they recognise that for disasters there would have to be some (fiscal) space provided,” the Prime Minister said.
He was speaking at a press conference at Jamaica House, Wednesday (September 29), to give an update on flood damage over the past three days and the actions being taken by his government and its response agencies.
“We are not yet through it, so we are not even able to say this is what has happened, this is the impact it has had and this is what it is going to cost us,” Mr. Golding stated. He said that the current priority is to respond to the immediate needs.
He noted that although severe, the weather conditions were not at hurricane level, which would trigger external responses. However, he said he has spoken with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to keep external partners informed, in the event that the country has to appeal for assistance.
