April 22, 2010

The Full Story

The Prime Minister, the Hon Bruce Golding, will leave Jamaica Friday (April 23) to attend the first Brazil-Caricom summit which gets underway on Monday, April 26, in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia.

Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Kenneth Baugh, will be in charge of the Government until the PM returns.

Mr. Golding will lead a delegation including representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM).
Brazil and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders are expected to discuss issues such as trade, integration and climate change when they meet on Monday. They will also sign bilateral agreements, including one on technical cooperation, and a protocol on political consultation.
The technical cooperation agreement will provide much assistance to the 15-member CARICOM grouping, as it includes co-operation in the areas of agriculture, health, education, natural resources and the environment, energy, fisheries and aquaculture. Jamaica is set to assume chairmanship of CARICOM) in July, instead of Haiti, an Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government decided in March. In the Chairmanship rotation schedule, Haiti was next in line to chair the Community, but its situation following the January 12 earthquake, dictates that it would not be in a position to assume the chairmanship. During the Prime Minister’s absence from the island, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign affairs and Foreign Trade, Dr Kenneth Baugh, will be in charge of the government.
