The Full Story

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, joined hundreds of Jamaicans, who gathered in Half-Way-Tree square, St. Andrew on Saturday (Dec. 2) in prayer for the nation.

The National Day of Prayer, Fasting and Repentance Solemn Assembly, organised by the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches (JUGC), saw members of the various Christian-based denominations coming together to seek God’s forgiveness and intervention on behalf of the nation.

In his address at the service, the Prime Minister said he was pleased to represent all leaders in Jamaica and endorsed the objective of the JUGC in staging the event.

“I come on behalf of all the political leaders, Government and Opposition. I come on behalf of the Parliament of Jamaica, all the Cabinet members, all the Senators, the legislators, all members of the judiciary and the penal system and members of the security forces. I come on behalf of all institutions, individuals and groups throughout Jamaica representing in the civil governance system, along with their administrators, managers, staff, membership and followers,” Mr. Holness said.

He encouraged all Jamaicans to pray consistently in their homes, workplaces and in public spaces at anytime.

“You can pray wherever you are. You can pray in your home. You can pray at your place of work. You always pray for your nation in the church but there is always something symbolic when the leaders of the nation say to the people of the nation ‘let us pray’. My heart has been moved to support this initiative because it is a good initiative,” Mr. Holness said.

“We pray because we recognise that there is a force that is stronger than us. We pray because even the mightiest warrior in the midst of war hoping for the victory turns his head to the heavens and ask for God to let the sun stand still so that he can live over the evil forces,” he added.

The Prime Minister then prayed for the hundreds of persons gathered in Half-Way-Tree and every Jamaican.

National Day of Prayer, Fasting and Repentance Solemn Assembly was launched at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday, November 29.

A similar event was held in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay on December 3.
