Phase-Three Works On North Gully Under Way

The National Works Agency (NWA) is undertaking phase-three upgrading works on the North Gully in St. James.

Community Relations Officer for the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, said the works, being carried out at cost of $4 million, involve the demolition of a section of the gully and the construction of a larger capacity concrete ‘U’ drain.

They are expected to be completed in early January 2017.

The project, which got under way in 2013, is aimed at increasing the capacity of a section of the gully, which runs through the Capital Heights community in Central St. James.

Ms. Ricketts said the first phase of the project saw approximately $27 million being spent to construct a 60-metre concrete channel.

Another 30-metre channel was built under the second phase, which was completed in 2015.

Ms. Ricketts informed that the works carried out so far have significantly improved the carrying capacity of the targeted sections of the North Gully, and have reduced flooding.
