Petrojam’s Dock Damaged by Vessel

June 2, 2009

The Full Story

At approximately 2315 hrs on Monday, June 1, 2009 the ship M/T Great News was transporting crude oil to the Petrojam Refinery when it collided into the company’s dock. Petrojam immediately notified the Coast Guard, Marine Police, Port Authority and ODPEM.
Preliminary assessment indicated that the dock was badly damaged and is temporarily out of service. A small oil sheen was seen, and containment booms were deployed as a precautionary measure. There has been no oil spill seen or reported either at the dock or from the ship. No one was injured during or after the incident. A more detailed assessment will take place today, June 2, to determine the status of underwater structures and the suitability of the dock for continued operation.
Petrojam has activated its contingency plan and will make every effort to ensure there is no disruption to the supply of petroleum products to the country.
Minister of Energy & Mining, Hon. James Robertson, was on site early Tuesday morning to inspect the damage. The Minister will convene a Press Conference and tour of the dock on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 7:30 am at the Petrojam Refinery.
An investigation is already in progress to determine the cause of the incident.
