The Full Story

Community Based Rehabilitation Jamaica (CBRJ), which is dedicated to children with disabilities, has honoured 23 persons and entities that have helped to transform the lives of persons with disabilities.

Speaking at a special event, held recently at the Arians Restaurant in Twickenham Park, St. Catherine, Acting Managing Director of the Group, Sandra Long-White, said the awardees have contributed to the process of ensuring that “we survive”.

“We are growing stronger every day and impacting the lives of the children. With your help, what a difference we have made. We salute you for that input into our programme, and we encourage you to give the support that is needed by children with disabilities,” Mrs. Long-White told the recipients.

For her part, Assistant Chief Education Officer, with responsibility for Special Education, at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Sharon Anderson-Morgan, said the CBRJ is providing world-class services to children with severe intellectual and physical disabilities, and their work and that of the sponsors must be celebrated.

Awardee, Dr. Arna Brown-Morgan, said she got involved with the group while she was quite young, and while she was not expecting the award, there is a “joy of seeing so many faces that I know”.

“Money can’t pay for this… there is a God above, and if I don’t do this, I am doing wrong,” she said.

“It has been a 25-year journey of giving. It is something I had to do. I have seen the growth of some of the babies into adults, and they have excelled,” Dr. Brown-Morgan said.

Meanwhile, Executive Director at the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD), Christine Hendricks, urged the group to continue to embrace a culture of unity, as they push “the development agenda”.

The CBRJ, which came out of a merger of the then 3D Projects and the Rural Services for Children with Disabilities (RSD), is based at 14 Monk Street, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, with an office at 94J Old Hope Road, in St. Andrew. It has been around since 1982.
