The National Parenting Support Commission (NPSC) will commence its 2017 Parent Mentor Programme on Tuesday, May 9 with an outreach event dubbed ‘From Street Talk to Real Talk’.
The activity is part of the NPSC’s Effective Parenting Intervention Framework (EPIF) and will be held in the communities of Rocky Point and Hayes in Clarendon.
Head of the Commission’s Parenting Support Coordination Division, Peta-Gay Waugh, told JIS News that the day’s proceedings, which get underway at 10:000 a.m., will see NPSC representatives, along with other stakeholders, walking simultaneously through both communities and interacting with residents.
The other participants will include trained parent mentors, social workers, and representatives from the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), among others.
“We will be going (from) door-to-door and talking to the residents to address key parenting issues and provide on the spot support,” she said.
Miss Waugh explained that ‘From Street Talk to Real Talk’ was grounded in the social and change theories as well as the public health perspective for integrating the family, school and community.
She pointed out that the programme uses a three-pronged approach: parental involvement at all stages of the child’s life (home, school and community); ascertaining specific community needs and composition; and identifying families in need of immediate psycho-social support.
Its objectives include: developing and strengthening parental skills and self-confidence as well as coping and problem solving skills; empowering parents by connecting them to on-the-spot resources and support systems to build family capacity; connecting home (family), school and community; assisting parents in promoting their children’s social and emotional development in order to reduce behavioural challenges; and assisting parents to manage and balance the demands of work and family life.
The day’s activities will culminate with a public forum at the Lionel Town Community Centre in Clarendon from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
