NSWMA to Implement Night Collections for Festive Season

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) will be stepping up operations in town centres across the island for the festive season.

Executive Director of the NSWMA, Audley Gordon, told JIS News that beginning December 15, the agency will be carrying out night collections in commercial areas between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.

“We expect to crank up our Christmas operations in terms of special collections from the 15th of December, which is considered the peak shopping period up to New Year. We will be looking at more night collections for the major town centres where there is heavy shopping. We will be going right up until the New Year to ensure that the place is kept clean,” he said.

Mr. Gordon informed that the agency will be working closely with the municipal corporations in the operations.

“We have been speaking with the corporations in terms of what streets will be open for vending, and we have begun to strategise how and when we will clean those streets,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gordon is appealing to the public to work with the NSWMA in the proper disposal of waste material.

“When you go shopping and accumulate all the gift boxes and wrapping papers, package them properly; we will come for them. We want to work together to make this the cleanest Christmas ever,” he said.

He assured that the NSWMA will be keeping to its regular collection schedule for residential areas during the Christmas period.

The NSWMA is an agency of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development.

Operations are carried out through its regional offices – Metropolitan Parks and Markets Ltd., Southern Parks and Markets Ltd., Western Parks and Markets Ltd., and North Eastern Parks and Markets Ltd.

The agency manages waste sites in four regions – Riverton, Retirement, and the Southern and Northeastern sections of the island.
