The Full Story

The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), yesterday (Jan. 19) presented some of its sanitation team members with gift baskets, movie tickets and certificates, as part of its ongoing ‘Get the Cash Competition’.
The competition rewards sanitation workers for exemplary work and helps to boost morale and raise the quality of service delivery among the crews who keep the nation’s streets clean.
This second quarterly ceremony of the competition, which was launched last year, was held at the headquarters of the NSWMA at 61 Half Way Tree Road in Kingston.
The competition allows drivers and sidemen directly employed to the NSWMA, the opportunity to compete for cash and other prizes. The competition will end on May 31, 2009, while the grand prize winning team will be announced on June 6, which will be celebrated as National Solid Waste Day. The grand prize winning team will receive $200,000 and other prizes to be shared among them. A team comprises one driver and three sidemen.
Judging for the competition takes place once per week, while drawings for prizes occur every three months. The judges include Zonal Monitors, Public Cleansing Managers, Regional Operations Managers, and the company’s Customer Relations Officers.
The criteria used to judge the teams include cleanliness of trucks, general attitude towards work and team spirit, punctuality, good attendance and accident records, dress and general appearance, deportment, timely and complete collection of garbage, and interest shown in alerting residents to their arrival in communities.
Points are also awarded based on the lack of customer complaints for assigned routes, good customer services and general feedback from the communities.
