The Full Story

Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, is assuring the country that there is no shortage of gasolene.

This assurance follows a fire that affected a section of the Petrojam facility on Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston yesterday (August 16).

“It will not cause any shortage or disruption in the petroleum trade. In fact, the refinery is still producing petroleum products, and we have more than three weeks’ supply in storage at the facility,” Dr. Wheatley said in an interview with JIS News.

In a statement issued this morning, Petrojam said one of its tanks caught fire about 4:00 a.m. The fire was extinguished by a joint team from the Jamaica Fire Brigade and the refinery, which activated its Emergency Response Plan.

Dr. Wheatley said the fire did not disrupt operations at Petrojam, “so we were still able to run the refinery and also to load the trucks for the delivery of petrol products”.

“We have a preliminary idea as to what could have caused the fire, but we are still doing further investigations. We will be doing a proper assessment of the situation,” he said.

There were no reports of injuries or loss of life.
