NHT Renames Head Office (Tribute to former Prime Minister)

The Head Office of the National Housing Trust (NHT) located at 4 Park Boulevard in New Kingston, was today (May 23) renamed the Michael Manley Building in honour of the late former Prime Minster who orchestrated the establishment of the Trust in 1976. The new name inscribed on the building was unveiled by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.
In her remarks at the renaming ceremony, Mrs. Simpson Miller said the renaming of the building was a historic moment and a fitting tribute to the memory of the former Prime Minister, especially since it was taking place on Labour Day. She said Michael Manley would have been proud to see that the NHT has remained true to its mission to provide housing for low-income earners at attractive rates, as well as the benefits offered to sugar workers and persons living in inner-city communities.
She said Mr. Manley whole-heartedly supported the vision behind the establishment of the NHT and the opportunity it created for improving the quality of life of all Jamaicans. She expressed the hope that the renaming of the building would serve to inform younger generations of Jamaicans about the legacy of Michael Manley and remind them of his courage.
Mrs. Simpson Miller commended the workers of the NHT for their service to Jamaica and urged them to remain resolute in satisfying the housing needs of Jamaicans.
The unveiling was preceded by Mrs. Simpson Miller’s signing of the official declaration to rename the building. The NHT Head Office was constructed in 1984 at a cost of $26 Million and is currently valued at $800 Million. The Trust plans to build approximately 8000 housing solutions to benefit its contributors over the next three years.
