New Basic School to be Constructed in Port Antonio

May 1, 2004

The Full Story

A contract for the construction of a building to house the George Cohen Basic School in Port Antonio, Portland, was signed on April 28 by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).
The project, which is sponsored by the George Cohen Basic School Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA), will cost about $7. 3 million. Direct beneficiaries of the project will be the school’s 121 students and four teachers.
Work began on the project on Monday, April 26 and the contract period is expected to last four months. W.A. Reid Construction Company Limited has been contracted to carry out the project.
The building will house four classrooms, an administrative office, and sanitary and kitchen facilities. The school area will also be fenced as a part of the contract.
The school was established in 1971 in the basement of the Love Lane Church of God in Port Antonio and still operates out of that facility. However, a few years ago, two of the school’s four classrooms were relocated to a trailer donated by a former church member. At present, both facilities are unsuitable for the delivery of early childhood education.
Speaking at the contract signing, Donald Miller, Senior Manager at JSIF, praised the school’s parent teachers’ association for the partnership it had established with JSIF to implement the project.
He pointed out that the project was being financed through the basic needs Trust Fund of JSIF, and that the organisation was happy to co-operate with communities and organizations, which were willing to contribute their own resources to bring about solutions which would foster social and economic upliftment.
