March 25, 2004

The Full Story

The internationally acclaimed National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) of Jamaica will return to the Walt Whitman Theatre at the Brooklyn Centre for the Performing Arts for two shows on April 17 and 18.
Famed Artistic Director, Rex Nettleford, will again lead the group of 50 dancers, singers and musicians. Laura McNeil, Jamaica’s Deputy Consul General to New York, spoke of the anticipation surrounding the group’s upcoming tour of New York.
“Jamaicans in this area will be treated to a little bit of home and those who are not Jamaicans will be exposed to one of the world’s very best ensembles,”Ms. McNeil said.
She added, “We are all anticipating yet another tour-de-force from the NDTC.”
The troupe will perform NDTC’s classics as well as what is being dubbed the “NYC premieres”. These premieres will include Rex Nettleford’s Cave’s End; Clive Thompson’s Folktales; David Brown’s Labess; Christopher Walker’s Fragile and Lester Horton’s The Beloved. Jean-Guy Saintus’ Inaction, a tribute to the Haitian Bicentennial, will also see its North American premier.
Also included will be favourites Brazilian Ode, Pocomania, Ritual of the Sunrise, Side by Side and Tintinnabulum. Though not an exhaustive list, musical selections will feature the work of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, David Rudder, Sal Negro, Sting, Toto Bissainthe and Jean Claude Zao.
NDTC’s performances are part of Brooklyn Centre’s Caribbean Celebration Series, which is being sponsored in part by Air Jamaica, Emigrant Savings Bank and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
