The Full Story

Munro College in St. Elizabeth emerged the winning school in the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Regional Heritage Debate Competition, which was held recently at Cecil Charlton Hall in Mandeville.
In second place was last year’s champion, Hampton High, with first time entrants St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), placing third.
Five schools from the parishes of St. Elizabeth and Manchester participated in the competition where they debated the moot: ‘Be it resolved that the works and teaching of National Hero Marcus Moziah Garvey are critical to the building of modern Jamaica’. The first speaker for the Munro Team, Darren Andrews was adjudged best speaker by the panel of judges.
Beverley Powell, Chief Judge for the competition had high praises for the winning team. “I was really impressed with the young men from Munro College who, through teamwork, good research technique and articulate delivery, took the title,” she said.
Mrs. Powell noted that overall the standard for the competition was very high. “The JIS must be commended for the amount of time and effort that has obviously gone into preparing and executing today’s activity, which will certainly go a long way in helping to foster better awareness among young people about the life and work of Marcus Garvey,” she stated.
JIS Regional Services Manager, Winsome Vanhorne-Christie, said the competition was started seven years ago to bring about greater understanding among students about the life and ideas of the National Heroes and Heroine, “as without a strong sense of patriotism, there is very little hope for the promulgation of our Jamaican heritage.” Mrs. Christie thanked the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo.) for agreeing to be the main sponsors of the competition this year.
“With this sort of partnership, we know that the future for the programme is very bright and in fact. She announced that a national play off was being planned for St. Ann, which would see the six regional champions competing against each other.
Sponsors of the St. Elizabeth/Manchester leg of the competition were Fontana Pharmacy, Stephenson’s Flower Shop, James Flower Shop, Acorn Book Store, Villa Bella Hotel, International Chinese Restaurant, Manchester Parish Library, Christiana Glass and Hardware Supplies, Hugh Nash and Black Brothers Incorporated.
