The Full Story

President of the Small Business Association of Jamaica (SBAJ), Hugh Johnson, says the upcoming Caribbean Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (MSME) Conference is an opportunity for partnerships to be built with other small businesses within the region.

“We think it’s high time for the small players within the region to get to know each other, to come together and to forge a path for themselves, along with the regional Governments, to get businesses among themselves moving,” he said.

Mr. Johnson was speaking in a recent interview on the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) television programme, ‘Issues and Answers’.

The SBAJ, in conjunction with the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, will be hosting the inaugural Caribbean MSME Conference from July 19-21 at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay, St. James.

Mr. Johnson said at the end of the conference, a position paper is to be produced and presented to the regional Governments, “as it relates to what is needed to get us moving and doing businesses among ourselves in the region”.

Persons attending the conference will benefit from information on: policy, trade and finance, which will be dealt with simultaneously in breakout sessions.

“We are in business to make money, and this will enable you to do better business for your enterprise. There are markets out there, and you might not individually have that level of resource to do that marketing promotion. We are giving you that opportunity to come to the conference and meet the people who will cause that to happen,” Mr. Johnson said.

The conference is being sponsored by the Jamaica National Group, RJRGleaner Communications Group, Flow, Development Bank of Jamaica, Spanish Court Hotel, and Caribbean Airlines.

Other partners include the Jamaica Stock Exchange, Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) and the Jamaica Business Development Corporation.

The SBAJ is a private non-profit business organisation, registered in 1974 to foster the growth and development of businesses and professional groups and to represent the entire small and micro business sector.
