More Support for National Road Services Programme

The National Road Services Improvement Programme and Institutional Strengthening project in the Ministry of Transport and Works is to receive $10 million to go toward enhancing the road maintenance and management system and engage consultants for Phases one and two in management practices, information technology and infrastructure.
In addition, the allocation, which has been made in the 2004/05 Estimates of Expenditure now before the House of Representatives, will fund the procurement of goods and services; civil works for routine maintenance on phases five, and six and establish a project co-ordination unit. Established in April 2002, the project is slated to run until March 2006 and is jointly funded by the Government of Jamaica and the Inter-American Development Bank.
It aims to promote the creation of a self-sustainable system for the provision of safe and reliable national road network, and support the Ministry and the National Works Agency (NWA) in the implementation of a new framework for administering the main road network. Another objective of the project is to strengthen the core activities of planning, programming and budgeting for the road sector and the maintenance design and construction of roads within the national network under the auspices of the NWA.
