Number portability  allows Jamaicans to move from one service provider to another, while retaining their original telephone number.

Speaking with JIS News, Mr. Paulwell said that since the new regime,  many  persons have switched service providers, and consumers  have been getting better service offers.

“The companies are providing additional benefits, they are focusing a lot more on service,  and prices have fallen.  So, all in all, I think it’s a tremendous success in Jamaica,” the Minister said.

He noted that  since number portability was implemented,  the number of persons  to have changed provider is 33,000.

The Minister told JIS News that the introduction of number portability  has generated significant interest from other Caribbean neighbours.

“A number of countries want to emulate what we’re doing now. We have received calls from a number of my colleagues who are very keen on implementing number portability in their countries,” Mr. Paulwell said.
