Montego Bay Pays Tribute to Lady Bustamante

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councilor Charles Sinclair, expressed regret at the passing of Lady Bustamante, widow of National Hero, the Rt. Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante, after being the first to sign a Condolence Book opened at the St. James Parish Council offices Tuesday (August 4).
“The history of Jamaica is replete with her work and her association with the first Prime Minister of Jamaica, Sir Alexander Bustamante, who participated in trade union activities throughout his life time, where he was ably assisted by her,” Mayor Sinclair said.
“History is also replete with the many awards that she has received over the years, in respect of her social work,” he told JIS News.
He noted Lady Bustamante’s dedication to the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), serving as both treasurer and trustee, ensuring that the Union’s financial affairs were in good order, constantly.

She served the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) as a member of its Executive Council and as a trustee, performing an effective role, behind the scenes, assisting in keeping the party in the forefront of Jamaican politics.
“With no children of her own, Lady Bustamante devoted herself to the children of others, becoming Patron to the Bustamante Hospital for Children, and gave of her time to the social welfare of the young,” he recalled.
The Mayor said that her work, as a Jamaican, has been recognized by all and, in her honour, the Condolence Book was opened at the St. James Parish Council (Cecil Donaldson Building). It is opened to the public, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5: 00 PM, daily.
“We encourage as many persons as possible to come and express their love and respect to Lady Bustamante. I believe that few women in Jamaica’s public life made the impact and left the indelible mark on the nation that Lady Bustamante did,” Mayor Sinclair told JIS News.
