Minister Vaz Says Lime’s 3G Offers Tremendous Telecom Benefits

Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, has said that there are tremendous benefits to be gained with the introduction of Landline, Internet, Mobile, Entertainment’s (LIME) 3G service.
The 3G trademark refers to the third generation of wireless technology, especially mobile communications. The technologies enable network operators to offer users a wider range of advanced services while achieving greater network capacity. It will allow government services to be accessed and executed using 3G instruments.
“Application for several trade licences can be completely executed online, and fines for speeding tickets are among the payments that can be made,” Mr. Vaz said, as he addressed the launch of LIME’s 3G Telecommunications Network on Monday (June 22), at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston.
The technology should simulate rapid deployment of health and education services and improved national security capabilities, which will allow citizens to undertake all electronic transactions on the go.
Mr. Vaz commended LIME for the introduction of the technology, adding that it holds much promise for the development of Jamaican businesses. He said that it provides a platform for entrepreneurs to develop value added services to meet the needs of their businesses and consumers.

“For example, it will be possible to remotely turn on preprogrammed appliances just in time to have a meal ready when you reach home. It provides opportunities for monitoring activities in the home or places of business; security systems can be installed with sensors to detect movement and activate video cameras which will communicate real time evidence of the activities directly to the 3G instrument,” he explained.
He also noted that with the fast pace of the new telecommunications technologies comes challenges to the legal and regulatory framework and, as such, the Government is giving priority attention to reshaping the framework.
He added that the Government has completed an extensive programme of research and consultation, and is moving speedily to establish a suitable regime that will be responsive to changes in the industry.
In welcoming the new concept, His Worship the Mayor of Kingston, Senator Desmond McKenzie, said that it will place Kingston on the map in terms of technology.
With the introduction of the services, LIME customers in the greater Kingston area now have access to a wide range of advanced features and services, including high speed internet, from their 3G compatible mobile phones and wireless devices.
LIME, formerly Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited, is one of the three main telecommunications companies operating in Jamaica.
