The Mico University College Launches ePay Cashless System

Education, Youth and Information Minister, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, is endorsing the launch of the ePay Cashless School Programme by The Mico University College.

The Minister said he supports any “honest and locally relevant” measure that would enhance efficiencies in the education system.

He lauded the school for pioneering the initiative, which will benefit students, teachers and administrative staff.

“The Mico University College is setting an example for other teachers’ colleges by implementing this cashless system. This is the way of the future,” he said.

Senator Reid was speaking at the launch held yesterday (October 5) at the teacher-training school on Marescaux Road in Kingston,

Some 2,000 students enrolled at the 180-year-old institution are likely to benefit from the ePay cards, which will have a wide range of features and uses, from campus access through to settling payments and making purchases both on and off the grounds of the institution.

“It shows that the college is committed to the use of technology in all spheres of school life,” said Mico’s President, Dr. Asburn Pinnock.

He noted that the ePay Programme fits with the Ministry’s strategy to transform the education system and forms part of the school’s thrust to become a “smart centre of technology”.

He indicated that already, other forms of technology-driven infrastructure are in place at the school’s library and other areas.

ePay, which is owned and operated by Alliance Payment Services Limited, is designed to save the university time and money by improving security, safety and efficiency.

The company’s Projects Manager, Stacy-Ann Jarrett, said the programme will, among other things, improve fiscal management, allow for the tracking and management of meals, and improve student security by eliminating opportunities for theft or loss of money.
