The Full Story

On Sunday, December 18, 2016, Jamaica joins other member states of the United Nations in celebration of International Migrants Day, in recognition of the rights, efforts and invaluable contributions of migrants worldwide.  International Migration has been an integral part of the historical and contemporary experience of most Jamaicans. The new era of migration in the 21st century brings about its share of challenges but also brings opportunities for the migrants and their families as well as the counties of origin, transit and destination.

Jamaica’s Green Paper on the National Policy on International Migration and Development (National IMD Policy) is one of the primary instruments used to guide migration and development stakeholders and practitioners in the management of the migratory processes. Jamaican stakeholders in this field continue to follow the seven guiding principles of the National IMD Policy as a guarantee of having international migration contribute positively to national development goals, while simultaneously enhancing the well-being of the Jamaican Diaspora who continue to improve  the business environment,  and strategic relationships and initiatives at home.

Dr. Wayne Henry, Director General of the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ),  notes that “The Institute has been playing a pivotal role in heightening public awareness to plights of migrants and their families, while promoting the opportunities that the migration and development nexus can bring in achieving prosperity, economic growth and improved human capital and utilization of other assets.”  The mainstreaming migration process is further accelerated by Jamaica’s strategic development initiatives in the areas of justice system reform, improved border security, robust data management, a strengthened national identification system and efficient circular labour migration programmes.

The PIOJ uses this opportunity to encourage all migration and development stakeholders who have been working assiduously to ensure that the rights of Jamaica’s migrant population are upheld.  On this International Migrants Day, let us recall and recognize the inspiring stories of our migrants and their journey for a better tomorrow.
