May Pen Infant School Parish Project on Labour Day

The May Pen Infant School in Clarendon is to benefit from a comprehensive road safety programme as this year’s Labour Day parish project. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Labour Day Committee held on May 6 at the offices of the Clarendon Parish Council.
Under the theme, ‘Road Safety First.Avoid the Worst’, the parish project will include the erection of additional road signs, particularly one indicating that there is a sharp corner approaching the school; the construction of a lay-by to accommodate parking across from the school gate; and a public education programme to include a road safety drill and a video presentation.
Mayor of May Pen and Chairman of the Labour Day Committee, Councillor Milton Brown told JIS News that the project was expected to involve many of the parents, teachers and the entire school community as well as the different organizations and agencies, such as the taxi associations, which transport the students to school; the Police, the National Works Agency (NWA) and the Jamaica Information Service (JIS).
“The number of road fatalities continues to be alarming, especially those involving pedestrians and children in our parish and, in keeping with this year’s theme, we are hoping that this project will be just one among many in all the various communities and divisions across the parish, which will make an impact in reducing the accidents, ” he said.
Some 23 additional Labour Day projects have been registered in the parish, to include the painting of new pedestrian crossings, re-painting of existing crossings, erecting road signs, refurbishing bus sheds and basic schools, road rehabilitation, re-painting a Postal Agency and clearing illegal dumps.
Members of the Labour Day Committee are appealing to residents of the parish to come out and support the Labour Day activities and to register their projects at the offices of the Clarendon Parish Council by May 20.
Labour Day will be observed on Monday, May 24.
