Marlie Hill Primary School Refurbished

Phase one of a refurbishment project for Marlie Hill Primary School at which Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller was a student, has been completed by Metro-Manhattan Links Inc. of the United States of America at a cost of just under half a million dollars. The organization is a service group of African-American women who undertake initiatives for the advancement of education in developing countries.
In her remarks at an unveiling ceremony held at the school on Wednesday (June 27), Mrs. Simpson Miller said her vision for the children of Jamaica includes providing the best possible educational opportunities in a beautiful, caring and supportive environment. She said the improvements to the physical surroundings at Marlie Hill Primary school have created a more pleasant environment where students could learn in comfort.
Mrs. Simpson Miller encouraged the students to work hard towards achieving their dreams while stating that they could “climb any mountain and cross any river.” She urged them to make it a habit of getting to school on time and pay close attention in class, as well as do their homework and respect themselves and others.
The Prime Minister had high praise for the principal, staff and the entire school community for the valuable work they are doing to educate the students. She applauded parents and guardians for supporting their children and called on them to be resolute in working towards providing a stable and positive home, school and community environment for them.
Mrs. Simpson Miller paid tribute to her parents and the many persons who supported her on the journey from Marlie Hill Primary School to Jamaica House. The journey the Prime Minister said, is an example of what life holds for every Jamaican child adding that it has inspired her to serve as a positive role model for others. She also thanked the representatives of Metro-Manhattan Links Inc. who were on hand to witness the unveiling for their care, compassion and concern, demonstrated through the support provided to the school.
Under phase one of the project the school roof has been replaced, the building repainted and the grounds landscaped. Phase two will involve the installation of new bathroom facilities to be undertaken by Food for the Poor and the design and construction of a computer laboratory, for which Cable and Wireless Jamaica has already donated ten computers.
