The Full Story

More than 450 persons converged on the Port Antonio Primary School in Portland yesterday (May 12), to participate in the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) special outreach, to educate persons about the birth registration process.

The second in a series of outreaches organized in observance of Child Month, the outreach yielded 375 applications, the majority being birth applications.

On hand to provide both public education and customer service was Sydian Brisett, Marketing and Planning Manager at the RGD, who told JIS News that the turn-out was more than expected but, welcomed nevertheless, because it offered the opportunity to further understand “some of the public education challenges and issues which need to be addressed”.

One such challenge, the Manager cited, was the late entry of names, which was of grave concern to several mothers present and, required detailed explanations of the process involved.

“Overall, persons were very receptive and took advantage of the opportunity to clarify other concerns about the registration process,” she noted.

Explaining the reason for including Portland among five parishes, Clarendon, St. Elizabeth, St. Thomas and Westmoreland being the others, to be covered during Child Month, Miss Brissett said that previous exhibitions and outreaches in these parishes indicated that there was a need to intensify public education.

The RGD commenced the special outreaches for Child Month with its Mobile Unit visiting Rocky Point in Clarendon, which saw more than 120 persons using the opportunity to hand in applications as well as have concerns addressed.

The schedules for the rest of the special outreaches are: Morant Bay Parish Church in St. Thomas on May 27; Frome Sports Club in Westmoreland on May 29; and St. Elizabeth Technical School in St. Elizabeth on May 31.

These special outreaches for the month are in addition to the more than 960 outreaches, organized islandwide each year by the RGD.
