October 8, 2003

The Full Story

The Manchester Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), has organised a number of activities to observe Fire Safety Awareness Week, to run from October 26 to November 1.
Sergeant Richard Smikle of the Fire Prevention Department told JIS News that the theme for the week was ‘Information is key for a fire safe community’.
He said the activities, to be undertaken in conjunction with the Mandeville Branch of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), would include a special devotional exercise and official opening of an exhibition at the Manchester Parish Library on Monday, October 27, which will run concurrently with a similar display to be mounted at the Mandeville fire station. This will be followed by an outreach meeting at Craighead Square in North-east Manchester.
On the following day, members of the Department will visit a number of children’s homes. “At 10:00 a.m. we will be going to the St John Basco Boys’ Home in Hatfield where we will be showing a video and conducting a lecture. Our next stop will be at Windsor Lodge and then it is on to Hanbury Home.
By 6:00 p.m. we will be at Redberry Square, again with the JIS doing another public education meeting,” Sergeant Smikle informed.
The Fire Prevention Officer pointed out that on Wednesday and Thursday the officers would visit a number of schools in the parish to conduct fire safety lectures.
Among the schools to be visited over the two days are Garlogie, Comfort Hall and Mile Gully primary schools, while community meetings will be held in Marshall Pen and Mile Gully on Thursday and Curphey Home and Plowden Square on Friday.
