Major Development Work Begins at Airport

Major development work began yesterday (March 1) at the Norman Manley International Airport, which will result in the alteration and expansion of the ticketing concourse.

The expansion work is estimated to cost $161.5 million, and will last for about 15 months.The existing ticketing concourse will be extended by more than 9,500 square feet of floor space, and includes the extension of the curbside drop-off pavement area, with provision for access by wheelchair passengers, and the construction of additional retail units.

Alterations will also be made to the existing departure concourse to facilitate passenger movement, with the addition of amenities to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. These improvements include the installation of new elevators, adequate air-conditioning, a public address system, as well as fire-fighting and fire detection facilities.

The curbside of the terminal building will be further enhanced with the erection of a new 5 metre (16 feet) high steel canopy, running north of the existing check-in/departure concourse.

Lead consultants for this expansion work are Harold Morrison and Robert Woodstock Associates Limited and the contractor is Cooper & Associates Ltd.

The Airport Management has said that all effort would be made during the period to minimise any discomfort to passengers and other airport users.
