Local Government Minister Meets with Municipal Corporations July 5

The general state of readiness of Municipal Corporations islandwide for the hurricane season is to be discussed at a special meeting called by Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, on July 5 at the Hyatt Ziva Hotel in Montego Bay.

Mr. McKenzie will meet with Disaster Coordinators and Public Relations Officers from all 13 Municipal Corporations.

The meeting is set for 10:00 a.m., and the Minister is also expected to obtain a report on the status of shelters under the purview of the Local Authorities.

Mr. McKenzie, who has portfolio responsibility for the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB), will also receive a report from that entity.

Following the recent flooding of areas in Clarendon and other parishes, the Minister wants to ensure that tangible preparations have been made to deal with emergencies.

While in the west, the Minister will also host an appreciation luncheon for compliance officers with the Ministries of Local Government and Finance, who participated in property tax exercises, at the Hilton Hotel on Friday, July 7, at 11:00 a.m. Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw, is expected to be in attendance.
