The Full Story

Cabinet has approved amendments to the Customs Act and has instructed that drafting instructions be issued to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel.

The announcement was made by Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, at a Jamaica House press briefing, held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, in St James, on June 17.

Senator Falconer said that the proposed amendments should facilitate improved and increased collection of customs duties; the efficient processing of customs related transactions; strengthen enforcement powers of the Commissioner; boost compliance and further support the automated system for customs data.

When amended, the legislation will bring Jamaica Customs more in line with international best practices and standards. The amendments will also provide a framework for fast movement of goods through the ports in anticipation of a logistics – centred Jamaica economy.

Senator Falconer explained that the comprehensive overhaul of the Customs Act has been identified as a key structural benchmark of the government’s economic reform programme.

The Customs Act currently does not provide a legislative scheme that can undergird the full modernisation of the Jamaica Customs Agency.
