Liguanea Post Office to Open by November

The Liguanea Post Office, which is being constructed at the site of the old facility in St. Andrew, should be opened for business by November.
This was disclosed by Carolle Hainsley, Deputy Postmaster General for the Postal Corporation of Jamaica (PostCorp) at a JIS Think Tank session held on Wednesday (Oct. 8) at the agency’s Half Way Tree Road offices in Kingston.
According to Mrs. Hainsley, the 8,000-square foot facility occupies two floors. The first floor will house the front office and customers’ mailboxes, while the operational section as well as additional mailboxes will be accommodated on the second floor.
She said that 1,000 letterboxes would be made available to customers with 700 of these already assigned. She further informed that the Liguanea facility would offer bill payment, priority mail service, Internet access, courier service and money transfers.
The new post office is part of a multi-million dollar commercial complex, which is being constructed under PostCorp’s reform and modernisation programme. Under this programme, a number of post offices across the island are being renovated including 15 since the start of the year at a cost of $15 million.
Highlighting recent initiatives to boost the revenue of the Postal Corporation, Mrs. Hainsley mentioned the posting of stamp dealers at various business locations since March this year, to make it easier for the public to purchase stamps. The stamps dealers are located at select pharmacies including Mayfair, Fontana and Lee’s Pharmacies, Portmore Mall, the University of Technology, Access Cambio and the Norman Manley International Airport.
Mrs. Hainsley noted that the reform process also involved a rationalisation programme, whereby an analysis of the postal network would be done to determine the profitability of each operation in order to bring about, “a more efficient and cost effective service”.
