Life and Work Of Paul Bogle To Be Highlighted In St. Thomas

The life and work of National Hero, the Right Excellent Paul Bogle and the Morant Bay uprising will be the focus of this year’s Heritage Week activities in St. Thomas from October 13 to October 20.
Co-ordinator of the Paul Bogle Foundation, Dorette Abrahams, told JIS News that during the week, an exhibition to recognize the life and work of Paul Bogle as well as the negative and positive aspects of the uprising will be held at the St. Thomas Parish Library in Morant Bay.
On Friday, October 17, schools and youth clubs in the parish will participate in a walk from Spring Gardens Primary School to Stony Gut. The walk will get underway at 10:00 a.m.
There will be a commemorative service at the Paul Bogle Square on Sunday, October 19, beginning at 4:00 p.m., where persons will light some 1,000 candles to symbolise the homes that were burnt during the uprising. Guest preacher will be Rev. Ernle Gordon, Rector of the St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church.Following the service, a gospel concert dubbed ‘Salute to Heroes’, featuring local talents, will be held at the Square.
Custos of St. Thomas, Rev. Leonard Saunders; Mayor of Morant Bay, Joan Spencer and Members of Parliament, Dr. Fenton Ferguson and James Robertson, are expected to bring greetings.
Miss Abrahams said the celebrations would culminate on Heroes Day, Monday, October 20, with a ‘Paul Bogle Parish Jambore’, to be held at the Phillips Field Sports Complex in Yallahs under the theme, ‘Ole Time Sinting Come Back Again’. Executive Director of the Social Development Commission, Robert Bryan is expected to deliver the opening address.
She pointed out that community groups had been invited to set up booths and to showcase what they have to offer in the areas of art and craft, ethnic foods and other activities unique to their communities.
“What we are trying to do is to encourage community members to display their products and hopefully, help them to turn this into a sustainable economic development for themselves,” she said.
In addition, Miss Abrahams said there would be an entertainment segment featuring songs, games and folk dances.
Heritage Week activities in the parish are being planned by the Paul Bogle Foundation, the St. Thomas Parish Council and the St. Thomas Association of Community Development Committees.
