The Full Story

The National College for Educational Leadership (NCEL) and Church Teachers’ College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), to facilitate a leadership training programme for middle managers in the public education system.

The one-year programme is opened to grade coordinators, heads of departments and deans of discipline and is expected to begin next year summer. A recruitment drive for participants is to begin as early as January 2016.

Compulsory courses and electives will also be opened to all participants. The electives will include training in pastoral care and technology-related subjects.

Face-to-face and online interactions will be the methods of instruction for the programme.

Speaking at the signing ceremony at the offices of the Education Ministry in Kingston, on December 15, Education Minister, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, said the initiative demonstrates the priority that the Ministry places on the professional development of leaders and managers throughout the education system.

“This agreement is a good example of how agencies and institutions in the education sector can pool resources to improve the delivery of education and training. This is also an example of how traditional teachers’ college can reinvent themselves as providers of professional development programmes,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Principal of Church Teachers’ College, Garth Anderson, said the signing of the MOU signals a step in the right direction for the development of education in Jamaica.

“The MOU will provide us with a committed approach to working more closely together to reach one common goal of developing and providing middle managers with the requisite skills in leadership as well as to train persons who are aspiring to become middle leaders,” said Mr. Anderson, adding that students will be the ultimate beneficiaries.
