The Full Story

The Hon. Gladys Bustamante, affectionately called ‘Lady B,’ will on Thursday, October 16, be given the Key to the City of Kingston at a civic ceremony to be held at the National Heroes’ Park at 4:30 p.m.
Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Desmond McKenzie, said that Lady B was being honoured for her contribution to the country’s development.
Mayor McKenzie was speaking today (October 15) at the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) monthly press briefing at the KSAC’s downtown office.
Jamaica’s first lady at the time of Independence, Lady B has made invaluable contribution to the country through her island wide involvement in social work particularly in sugar communities, among port workers and their families, and assisting children of destitute parents.
She was also actively involved in the formation of Trade Unions particularly the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), where she has been a Trustee since 1938, and Jamaica’s politics as wife of National Hero, Sir Alexander Bustamante.
In recognition of her work, Lady B was invested with the Order of Jamaica in 1982.
Among those expected to attend the ceremony are Governor-General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Sir Howard Cooke; Leader of the Opposition, Edward Seaga and Minister of Local Government, Community Development and Sport, Portia Simpson-Miller, who will represent Prime Minister P.J. Patterson.
