The Full Story

Scores of children participated in the National Child Month Committee’s (NCMC) Action Day tree-planting project on Friday, May 23, at the Robert Schuman Roundabout in Agualta Vale, St. Mary.

“Action Day this year coincided with National Labour Day 2014, and as the nation focuses on climate change, we the members of the NCMC recognised the importance of teaching our children to be responsible. Planting trees is just one of the many ways that they can help to protect the environment,” Chairman of NCMC, Dr. Pauline Mullings told JIS News.

“We want to get the children of the nation to give back to their communities and also help to enhance the lives of others,” she added.

His Worship the Mayor of Port Maria, Councillor Levan A. Freeman, who gave the main address at the opening ceremony, held at the St. Mary Recreational and Social Centre, expressed gratitude to the NCMC for choosing the parish for this event.

“I endorse the idea of planting trees that will not only beautify our land but also help to take care of the environment,” the Mayor said. He also thanked Jamaica Producers Group for sponsoring the day’s activity.

More than 50 fruit and ornamental trees were planted with assistance from members of staff of the company, who will also be responsible for maintaining the area where the trees are planted.

Launched in 2006, National Action Day is the equivalent of Labour Day for children. On the occasion, young people across the island are encouraged to participate in meaningful projects.

Other highlights for the Child Month were the inaugural Youth Academic Achievement Awards ceremony, and National Children’s Day activities. Action Day was the final activity for the month.
