JUTC Donates Relief Supplies to Haiti

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) donated relief supplies valued at over $100,000 to the Haiti-Jamaica Society/Friends of Haiti, Wednesday (April 14), to assist the rehabilitation efforts in the aftermath of the January 12 earthquake in Haiti.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony at the offices of Nationwide Radio FM, Kingston, JUTC’s Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Reginald Allen, noted that while the earthquake occurred three months ago, the needs of the Haitians continue.
The supplies donated by the JUTC consisted of clothes, shoes, toiletries and accessories, among other things.
“It’s a normal, natural thing that we do whenever we have a natural disaster here, so it’s just extending it a little further up field. We are not focusing on the value of the articles, it’s really the human spirit behind the effort,” he stated.

The supplies, donated by the JUTC, consist of clothes, shoes, toiletries and accessories, valued at over $100,000.

President of the Haiti-Jamaica Society, Ms. Myrtha Desulme, noted that the donations are “welcomed,” as there is still an urgent need for supplies in Haiti.
“We are so happy to receive these clothing and toiletries, because the people of Haiti really are going to benefit from these donations, which are going to go a very long way,” she stated.
Friends of Haiti representative, Ms. Lorna Green, urged Jamaicans to continue to provide assistance in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake.
Mr. Allen told JIS News that some of the supplies had been donated by staff of the JUTC to assist Haitians who might come to Jamaica after the earthquake. However, when the flood of immigrants did not occur, the company teamed with the Haiti-Jamaica Society and Friends of Haiti, by offering buses to pick up additional donations from various locations.
The JUTC also partnered with Nationwide Radio to source support for the Haitians, through public appeals.
