The Full Story

Some 5,000 streetlights were repaired by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo) in the Corporate Area between October of last year and January of this year.
This is after the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) requested that the light and power company repair the 23,000 non-functioning streetlights across the Corporate Area Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Desmond McKenzie said that there had been a significant improvement in this area by the light and power company.
He made the disclosure while addressing the KSAC’s monthly press briefing on Tuesday (February 11) in Downtown Kingston.
Turning to the removal of illegal signs and billboards, the Mayor said that the KSAC would continue with this programme. He said that they would be targeting the Molynes Road areas, from the Washington Boulevard and then into Half-Way-Tree.
Meanwhile, the Council will also be targeting the Downtown Kingston area. “We are going to come Downtown and clean it up once and for all,” he said.
He also disclosed that within four weeks that the KSAC would begin a public education programme on the requirements for setting up signs and billboards as well as the issue of permits for buildings.
Mayor McKenzie said that the KSAC was aware of the importance of public education, noting that this was the basis for organizing the programme that would take the form of leaflets and brochures, which would be distributed across the municipality.
On the programme of replacing and repairing street signs, the KSAC has completed work in Patrick City and work has started in Harbour View, which should be completed in a few weeks. The Council is expected to move into Rollington and Vineyard Towns next.
Already the Council has spent $5 million on this programme. Meanwhile, the Council is also appealing to members of the public to desist from vandalizing the signs.
