JPS and Partners Credit Union Gives Scholarship/Grants to Children of Members

The back-to-school financial stress has been reduced for one university student and 30 others entering high school, after they were awarded a scholarship and bursaries by the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) and Partners Co-operative Credit Union Limited.
The presentations were made Wednesday (August 19) at an awards function at the Knutsford Court Hotel, New Kingston.
The 2009 recipient of the Albert ‘Bertie’ Morris Scholarship, Peta Gaye Roberts, said she felt “grateful, privileged, overwhelmed and filled with joy.” She noted that she has proven that hard work pays off, and that with perseverance success is possible.
She also thanked the credit union for providing the scholarship and grants, encouraging the company to continue helping students in need.

Peta Gaye received $100,000 to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the University of the West Indies (UWI). She will receive the sum, annually, over the three years of her course of study, providing she maintains a B average.
Thirty other students, who recently passed their Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) and are about to begin high school, received bursaries worth $12,500 each.

President of the JPS and Partners Co-operative Credit Union Limited, Derrick Tulloch, said the provision of bursaries and scholarship was one way in which the credit union demonstrates its commitment, as a partner, to its members.
He said the scholarship is awarded annually to a child of a member, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration, computer science or engineering.
“We are looking to widen the options next year to include nursing and pharmacology, because we recognise, for national importance, these two fields are in scarce supply,” Mr. Tulloch announced.
Guest speaker was Opposition spokesperson on Information and Youth, Lisa Hanna, who commended the institution for its interest in youths, recalling that the youth population is the largest group in Jamaica.
Miss Hanna said today’s youths need a stimulus to drive them to achieve, as they will be the ones to lead the country in the future.
“What we have to attempt to do is to find solutions to put them on a pathway to success. And that pathway has to do with finding those industries that they can go into, to drive for the next ten years this economy. It has to do with training and it has to do with vision,” she proposed.
This is the eighth year that the JPS and Partners Co-operative Credit Union Limited has awarded scholarships and bursaries, with over 200 bursaries awarded over previous years.
During the ceremony, the credit union also unveiled its new corporate logo, symbolising its three ideals – growth, professionalism and innovation.
