The Full Story

The Jamaica Mortgage Bank (JMB) will be staging a housing seminar on June 22 to facilitate discussions on how the housing sector can impact economic development.

Themed: ‘Achieving Economic Growth through Investment in the Housing Sector’, the event, to be held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston, will feature presentations and a panel discussion with stakeholders and representatives in the industry.

Minister without Portfolio with responsibility for Water, Works and Housing, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, will open the series of presentations with a focus on: ‘The vision for housing’.

General Manager at the JMB, Courtney Wynter, will present on ‘The housing sector as a driver of economic growth’; Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), Peter Knight, will look at ‘Finding the delicate balance between orderly development and a sustainable environment’ and CEO for 138 Student Living Ltd., John Lee’s presentation will highlight ‘Financing housing development through private-public sector partnership’.

The panel discussion dubbed: ‘Removing impediments to orderly and sustainable development – bridging the demand-supply gap for affordable and safe housing’, will be moderated by senior journalist and President of the Press Association of Jamaica, Dionne Jackson-Miller.

The panellists include representatives from the Realtors Association, National Housing Trust, Jamaica Developers Association and Jamaica National.

Mr. Wynter told JIS News that the seminar is open to anyone who is interested in housing and mortgages, particularly developers, engineers, land surveyors, architects, regulators, Parish Councils, real estate lawyers, and persons who want to hear how housing can be used for sustainable development in Jamaica.

The seminar will last from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The cost to attend is $14,000; however, a student rate of $7,500 is being accommodated for those with identification cards.

The JMB, now in its 45th year of operation, was established with the mandate to finance safe and affordable housing, so that all Jamaicans will have access to home ownership. The agency seeks to mobilise financial resources for on-lending to private and public sector developers and financial institutions; to develop an active secondary mortgage market; and to provide mortgage indemnity insurance.
