JIS Mounts Black History Month Exhibit In The UK

October 22, 2003

The Full Story

A special exhibition, highlighting Jamaica’s rich culture and heritage, opened at the Hemel Hempstead Public Library in Hertfordshire, England on Friday, October 17.
Featured are photographs and profiles of the national heroes and heroine and other outstanding Jamaicans, replicas of the national flag, maps and posters of key locations and booklets on Jamaica’s history and culture, including national symbols.
The exhibition was mounted by the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) with support from the Community Relations Office of the Jamaica High Commission in London, at the invitation of the Caribbean Women Equality and Diversity Forum. It was held as part of activities to mark Black History Month and National Heroes Day celebrations in the United Kingdom.
Poet Nii Ayikwei, storyteller Ainsley Burrows and visual artist, Marianne San Miguel, participated in the official opening on National Heroes Day, October 20.
Marguerite Trottman of the Caribbean Women Equality and Diversity Forum, told JIS News that the organisation wanted to reflect the rich diversity of Jamaica’s history and culture as part of the Black History Month celebrations. She said it was fitting that both National Heroes Day and Black History Month were observed in the same month.
She observed that the exhibition would serve the dual function of educating the wider Hemel Hempstead community about Jamaica and the achievements of its nationals, and portray a more balanced image of the country.
