The Full Story

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) on Thursday (Oct. 9) presented a cheque valued at $1 million to the Jamaica Special Olympic team, to offset expanses for sending athletes to the Special Olympic Games in Dublin, Ireland this summer.
The money represents proceeds from the Law Enforcement Torch Run held in May of this year. Some 250 officers across the island participated in the annual fundraising drive, which began in Stony Hill, St. Andrew with Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jevene Bent, receiving a Special Olympic torch from an athlete, which was then passed on to various teams of officers who run quarter mile relay legs throughout the island, collecting donations along the way. The run culminated in Kingston with Commissioner of Police, Francis Forbes receiving the torch.
Deputy Commissioner Bent, who handed over the million-dollar cheque to Chairman of the Jamaica Special Olympics, Dr. Carlton Davis, noted that the police force was, “putting no limit on its support for the venture. We want to continue to ensure that the flame of hope continues to burn,” she said. The JCF has been supporting the Special Olympic team for the past 15 years.
Dr. Davis, in thanking the JCF, said the contribution “really reflects the best of the institution and I am sure that there are other people involved in other areas, who can say the same”.
