JAS Members Now Have Easier Access To Legal Services

February 2, 2004

The Full Story

Members of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) should now find it easier to access legal services or advice as the organisation has retained the services of a legal officer and has established a Legal Council to provide assistance to its members.

President of the JAS, Senator Norman Grant, told farmers in St. James that his organisation contracted a legal officer for a 12-month period initially, effective November 2003. He said that the JAS’ Legal Council comprised some of the best legal minds in the country.

He was addressing the half-yearly meeting of the St. James branch societies of the JAS, in Maroon Town, late last week.

Senator Grant said that the mission of the Council was to ensure that members of the Society were provided with an efficient service of legal advice and assistance. He highlighted areas such as acquiring titles for land, making wills, making or securing proper lease agreements, among others, as areas for which this service could be accessed.

Pointing out that the JAS was entering into collaborative arrangements with several individuals, groups and organisations, Senator Grant said the formation of the Council stemmed from a collaborative effort, as a team of lawyers had consented to work with the JAS.

“We are going to represent your interest. We know that farmers cannot afford the service by themselves, but what we have done, is in a collaborative way to now provide a service to our farmers,” the JAS President said.

He further explained that the service would not be totally free, but would cost the farmers just a fraction of what it would cost, if individuals accessed the same legal services on the open market.
