Jamaicans Urged To Shun Deviant Behaviours

October 22, 2003

The Full Story

Pastor of the Bethany Baptist Church, in St. Ann, Rev. Norva Rodney, has called on Jamaicans to shun ignorance and arrogance, as well as deviant behaviours, and pay greater attention to truthfulness, well-being, and the good of humanity. He also encouraged Jamaicans to embrace spirituality and culture, in order not to limit themselves in taking the nation forward.
Pastor Rodney was delivering the sermon at the Heritage Service of Thanksgiving, held at the church on Sunday, October 19, under the theme: ‘Embracing Our Heritage .Out of Many One People’.
The service was organized by the St. Ann Civic Affairs and Community Relations Committee, in collaboration with the church.
Noting that the theme was helping to shape “our vision, as well as our mission in nationhood and nation building”, Rev. Rodney said that as part of the wider culture, it was necessary to condemn violence, criminal activities, and human injustice to one another, and instead, cling to righteousness and justice for all.
He said as the people sought to live in peace and harmony, it was also necessary for Jamaicans to give thanks for the heroes, who displayed the right values and attitudes, “from which we can pick up the culture of spirituality, humility, uprightness and integrity, and practise them as part of our being and existence”.
In his greetings, Custos of the parish, R.O.Walters, said that as the country celebrated its heritage, persons needed to be reminded of the work and worth of all those who struggled and demonstrated patriotism.
He said it was necessary “to treat our people with love and respect in order to help them turn out to be heroes of whom we all can be proud”.
Messages from Prime Minister P. J. Patterson; Leader of the Opposition, Edward Seaga, and Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay, Councillor Delroy Giscombe, were read at the service by D. J. Campbell, St. Ann Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Chairman; Ernest Smith, Member of Parliament for the area; and Derick Frater, Councillor for the area.
Also attending the service were, Norma Walters, wife of the Custos; Marcia Angus, Member of the Committee; Pat Laird, JCDC Parish Manager, and Claudia Carter, Director of Administration, St. Ann Parish Council.
