Jamaicans Urged to Rise Up and Build

The Full Story

Ambassador to the United States, Anthony Johnson, is urging Jamaicans to “rise up and build,” noting that the global recession is ripe with opportunities for investment.
“Now is the time for people with ideas to get up and do something with those ideas. It is the time for us to see what we can buy as groups, as organisations, as individuals or as companies,” he stated.
He was addressing the opening ceremony of the 32nd Annual Conference of the National Association of Jamaican and other Supportive Organizations, Inc. (NAJASO) on July 17 at the Hilton Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States (US).
According to Ambassador Johnson, most successful people got their start when times were bad.
“It is difficult for resource-challenged people to get their start when times are good. Business people are much too busy making money to bother with you if you don’t have anything. But if you go to the bank today, during these challenging times, the banker may offer you a seat, call you Sir/Ma’am, and be more willing to deal with you,” he pointed out.
Mayor of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin, in her welcome remarks, said she had found Jamaicans to be a warm, loving and caring people with keen intellect, deep compassion and care for humankind.
She said she hopes to infuse the Jamaican spirit into Atlanta, and charged those in attendance with the task of helping to build a world that is safe, non-violent and where access to a high quality of life has no barriers.
Jamaica’s Honorary Consul to Atlanta, Vin Martin, congratulated NAJASO for being the first organisation with Jamaican origin to stage its convention in Atlanta.
Leader of the Opposition, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller also attended the opening reception, which was hosted by the Atlanta Jamaican Association. Later in the day, participants heard a message from Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, which was read by Ambassador Johnson.
The conference concluded on July 19.
