Jamaican Appointed President of Florida Memorial University

Dr. Karl S. Wright, an economist and a Jamaican national, was recently sworn in as President of Florida Memorial University (FMU), a historically black college, located in North Miami.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Wright served as Executive Vice President and Provost of FMU. He is the 11th President since the college was founded in 1879.
Throughout his 12-year tenure at FMU, Dr. Wright has been instrumental in increasing the size and upgrading the credentials of the faculty, leading the institution through successful accreditation processes and developing significant external relationships with the community.
He has also contributed to FMU’s recent elevation to graduate-degree status, broadening the university’s academic offerings.
Dr. Wright has enhanced the university’s global outreach initiatives. Under his direction, articulation agreements were signed with several colleges abroad, which led to faculty participation in programme activities at those institutions in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia.
Prior to joining FMU, Dr. Wright worked at South Carolina State University and North Carolina A & T State University, both in the Southern USA.Dr. Wright was educated at the University of Maryland, and Mississippi State University.
Located in Miami Gardens, the historically black institution has an enrolment of nearly 2,000 students, and offers 43 undergraduate and graduate degree programmes to a culturally diverse student body, including many Caribbean nationals.
