March 30, 2004

The Full Story

Following the recent Inter-sessional Meeting of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community in St. Kitts/Nevis, representatives of the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on Cricket and members of the Technical Advisory Group will meet in Barbados this weekend to deal with major issues relating to profit sharing and the collaborative approach that the region should take in relation to the staging of the Cricket World Cup in 2007.
Prime Minister P.J. Patterson convened a meeting of the Bid Committee at Jamaica House this morning (Tuesday, Mar. 30) to prepare for Jamaica’s participation at the meeting to be held in Bridgetown, Barbados on April 3. Jamaica will be represented at the meeting by Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Mr. Delano Franklyn; Cabinet Secretary Dr. Carlton Davis, Dr. Wayne Reid, Chairman of the Bid Committee and Mr. Jackie Hendriks, President of the Jamaica Cricket Association.
The Bid Committee reported to the Prime Minister that a Secretariat had been established at the offices of the Development Bank of Jamaica and that Mr. Michael Hall, on secondment from Independence Park Limited, had been appointed General Manager for the Committee. In addition, Dr. Reid told the meeting that financial and administrative personnel have also been appointed.(MORE)

Dr. Reid said the Bid Committee has retained the services of local and foreign events planners and architects to assist in the presentation of the Bid Book that is to be submitted by May 6th. He added that the Bid Committee was augmented by a Steering Committee which represents various sub-sectors required for the successful staging of the tournament. These include finance, health, security, accommodation, transportation, venues, information technology and public relations.
He said a limited liability company should be registered by next week to take over the responsibilities of the Bid Committee. The company will act on behalf of the Government of Jamaica in satisfying all the conditions of bidding and preparing for the event.
Funding for the Bid Committee and the limited liability company is being advanced by the CHASE Fund under a contractual arrangement.
In the meantime, it was reported that the work of the special financial and technical teams examining other crucial matters relating to the staging of the tournament was far advanced and that a report would shortly be submitted to the Prime Minister.
