The Full Story

Jamaica will be hosting the 2004 Commonwealth Local Government Forum High Level Regional Symposium and Board Meeting from April 19 -23 at the Holiday Inn in Montego Bay and at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, respectively.
Minister of Information, Senator Burchell Whiteman said yesterday(March 29), that Cabinet had approved Jamaica’s hosting of the events.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, the Minister said that the High Level Regional Symposium would be held from April 19 to 21 in Montego Bay, while the Commonwealth Local Government Forum Board Meeting would be held from April 21 to 23 in Kingston.
Minister Whiteman said that for the symposium, there would be a gathering of regional Local Government leaders, Ministers and high officials from across the region to consider the health of local democracy in the region.
The symposium, which is being held under the theme, ‘Making Local Government Work’, will also consider ways in which local governments could be strengthened, particularly through promoting greater regional exchange and co-operation.
The Commonwealth Local Government Forum Board meeting will also bring together senior Ministers and local government leaders from across the Commonwealth to expand knowledge and understanding of different systems of local government and to see how international best practices can help to improve the quality of local government services.
The Forum was established in 1995 and works to promote and strengthen effective democratic local government throughout the Commonwealth and to encourage the exchange of good practice in local government structures and services.
It also serves as a partnership and is increasingly recognized as one of the ways in which local councils can leverage additional resources and skills to provide better and more cost effective services.
